This free-standing "Not For Profit" children's hospital is beginning its Magnet journey and currently experiencing phenomenal growth. We are seeking a Clinical Nurse Specialist with Pediatric ICU experience to support this role.


This is a full time, permanent (not travel, contract, or interim) opportunity with a Level 1 Trauma Center

About the Unit: The PICU is specially designed to meet the needs of children. The unit's physicians and nurses are pediatric specialists and focus on providing developmentally appropriate care. A brand new 34-bed unit was added in 2019, which increased the total capacity to 46 beds, including PICU, CVICU, and Step-Down.

Under limited direction, the Clinical Specialist is a hospital-based, service-specific position.
Day-to-day responsibility will be to assure that safe patient care is occurring. Some of the duties are as follows:
  • Checks with the physicians to see their issues and concerns regarding patient care.
  • Rounding on travelers and new grads to determine competency/confidence levels are aligned with the patient assignment.
  • Monitor appropriate use of restraints - order and documentation match patient presentation.
  • Assess with the nurse, patient skin status, and implement evidence-based interventions as needed.
  • Review the medical orders to ensure that therapies are started in a timely manner.
  • Includes review for central line necessity, urinary catheter necessity, pressure ulcer prevention, and fall prevention.
  • Supports and/or conducts nursing research to further the body of evidence-based nursing practice.
  • Provides leadership in advancing the practice of nursing.
  • Serves as a change agent through individual and team coaching and participation in committees, task forces, and projects system-wide.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Performs as the clinical expert in evidence-based practice within specific patient populations.
  • Responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating patient-specific and population-based programs of care for the assigned patient population.
  • Develops and implements innovative alternative solutions that address system problems or patient care issues in collaboration with the services interdisciplinary team.
  • Supports and/or conducts nursing research to further find the body of evidence-based nursing practice.
  • Provides leadership in advancing the practice of nursing.
  • Serves as a change agent through individual and team coaching and participation in committees, task forces, and projects system-wide.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Masters of Nursing from an approved school of nursing
  • Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse. Must have Pediatric ICU experience; preference will be given to candidates with experience with home ventilator programs and patient family teaching.
  • Licensure/Certifications/Registrations Required:
    • Current License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse - Clinical Nurse Specialist.
    • Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association is required upon hire.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of advanced clinical theory and nursing practice standards.
    • Knowledge of research procedures.
    • Knowledge of process improvement techniques and tools.
    • Knowledge of teaching methods and learner objectives.
    • Good communication skills.
    • Computer literate.
