Meteorologist - Weather Prediction Expert
Our client requires the state of the art in weather prediction and modelling of atmospheric effects. Key to this will be understanding the atmospheric physics associated with weather prediction and the knowledge of how to develop large scale systems to predict operational aviation weather. The system being developed must determine current and forecast weather conditions for all flight altitudes, including the direction and speed of wind, cloud cover, and precipitation. The weather support required is more demanding than typical in aviation. Weather support must take into account what conditions may affect a flight and then find a safe haven aloft for continuing the mission. The weather prediction system being developed must rely on ensemble probabilistic forecasting, weather satellite, weather radar, Doppler wind LiDAR, detailed physics-based computer models, plus surface weather station information, onboard sensors and other tools to develop weather reports and predictions will be engineered and developed with weather team help. Extensive climatology studies to develop probabilistic weather bounds for many locations will be developed.
The weather modelling and prediction system will represent the state of the art in weather prediction and modelling of atmospheric physics.
Will fly at all hours for extreme endurance (~90 days), the weather team may have to work nights, weekends, and holidays, especially if there is an urgent need for weather services.
The weather team members need to have an analytical mind and the ability to work under pressure. They should have extensive software development experience in other weather prediction codes or codes that model atmospheric physics. They should have a familiarity with aviation and aviation weather requirements.
BS on Atmospheric Science/Meteorology degree or related field (Physics, Math, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science).
+3 years of experience at developing software to leverage model output and predict weather and/or atmospheric physics.
+5 years software development experience developing weather prediction models or atmospheric physics models.
Programming skills in Python, R, C/C++, or similar language
- Spanish language skills not required, but a plus.
- C/C++, Python, R
- Weather climate data skills.
- AWIPS workstation familiarity.
- Experience with WRF/ARW model and global ensemble models.
- Operational aviation forecasting experience.
